Inside the IGCSE Programme

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is the world's most popular international qualification for 14-16 year olds. It mirrors the rigour of the British curriculum while allowing schools to tailor content to local contexts. Examinations are sat twice a year (May/June and October/November) across accredited centres worldwide. Results are benchmarked globally, giving learners a transparent pathway into A Levels, IB Diploma, foundation programmes, or early university admissions.

Subject Groupings

Students usually select 6-9 subjects across the major groups:

  • Languages: First Language English, English as a Second Language, Literature in English, French, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, or approved local languages.
  • Humanities & Social Sciences: History, Geography, Global Perspectives, Economics, Business Studies, Sociology, Religious Studies.
  • Sciences: Coordinated Sciences (Double Award), separate Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Marine Science/Environmental Management.
  • Mathematics: Core and Extended Mathematics, Additional Mathematics for ambitious STEM pathways.
  • Creative, Technical, and Vocational: ICT, Computer Science, Art & Design, Design & Technology, Enterprise, Music, Drama, Physical Education, Travel & Tourism.

Assessment Model

Each syllabus specifies the mix of written papers, practical tests, oral assessments, and coursework. Science practicals may be examined through school-based assessments or an alternative-to-practical paper. Languages include listening and speaking components, while creative subjects rely on portfolios. Learners can choose the Core curriculum (targeting grades C-G or 5-1) or the Extended curriculum (targeting grades A*-E or 9-3). This flexibility allows MetaSchool mentors to personalise exam entries to the learner's readiness.

Building a Balanced Timetable

Our counselors help families:

  • Sequence subjects across two sittings to avoid timetable clashes.
  • Blend STEM, humanities, and creative subjects for holistic development and compliance with university prerequisites.
  • Integrate English proficiency, academic writing, and research skills through interdisciplinary projects.

Beyond the Exam

IGCSE results feed directly into sixth form and university guidance. Students receive digital transcripts, predicted-grade consultations, and portfolio clinics for selective schools. Combined with MetaSchool AI's adaptive tutoring, learners build evidence of competencies that resonate with admissions officers-from lab practical videos to entrepreneurial showcases.
