Inside the IGCSE Programme
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is the world's most popular international qualification for 14-16 year olds. It mirrors the rigour of the British curriculum while allowing schools to tailor content to local contexts. Examinations are sat twice a year (May/June and October/November) across accredited centres worldwide. Subject Groupings
Students usually select 6-9 subjects across the major groups:
- Languages: First Language English, English as a Second Language, Literature in English, French, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, or approved local languages.
- Humanities & Social Sciences: History, Geography, Global Perspectives, Economics, Business Studies, Sociology, Religious Studies.
- Sciences: Coordinated Sciences (Double Award), separate Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Marine Science/Environmental Management.
- Mathematics: Core and Extended Mathematics, Additional Mathematics for ambitious STEM pathways.
- Creative, Technical, and Vocational: ICT, Computer Science, Art & Design, Design & Technology, Enterprise, Music, Drama, Physical Education, Travel & Tourism.
Assessment Model
Each syllabus specifies the mix of written papers, practical tests, oral assessments, and coursework. Science practicals may be examined through school-based assessments or an alternative-to-practical paper. Languages include listening and speaking components, while creative subjects rely on portfolios. Learners can choose the Core curriculum (targeting grades C-G or 5-1) or the Extended curriculum (targeting grades A*-E or 9-3).
