What is NECO SSCE?

The National Examinations Council (NECO) conducts the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) as Nigeria's homegrown alternative to WASSCE. The SSCE Internal diet is for SS3 learners in approved schools, while the External diet serves out-of-school candidates and resits. MetaSchool mirrors NECO's timetable, provides practical labs, and ensures learners master state and federal curriculum benchmarks.

Core Subject Requirements

Every candidate must attempt the following core papers:

  • English Language: Tests comprehension, essay writing, summary, oral English, and objective grammar items.
  • Mathematics: Covers number and numeration, algebraic processes, plane mensuration, trigonometry, and introductory statistics.
  • General Studies: Depending on the school's offering, students take General Science, Agricultural Science, or Civic/Social Studies as compulsory components to promote national values and scientific literacy.

Elective Clusters

Learners select 3-4 electives aligned to their chosen pathway:

  • Science & Technology: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Further Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Electronics, Computer Studies.
  • Arts & Humanities: Literature-in-English, Government, History, CRS/IRS, Nigerian Languages, Music.
  • Commerce & Business: Economics, Financial Accounting, Commerce, Data Processing, Marketing, Office Practice.
  • Vocational/Trade: Auto Mechanics, Building Construction, Carpentry and Joinery, Catering Craft, Garment Making, Animal Husbandry.

Schools can register additional trade subjects introduced by NECO's entrepreneurship push, giving students workplace-ready competencies.

Assessment Format

Most subjects have Paper 1 (objective test) and Paper 2 (theory/essay). Science and practical subjects include Paper 3 practical exams or alternative-to-practical tests. Internal candidates submit school-based assessments worth 20% of the final grade. External candidates sit purely external papers. Scripts are marked electronically with strict double-marking to maintain credibility.
